David Butenhof's Programming with POSIX Threads was published 10 years ago, in 1997. This is simple: to make these function threads-safe in an effective manner, glibc uses a mutex. The Phi coprocessor uses MIMD threads that place no restriction on how threads run or communicate. Thread priorities and synchronisation is quite a thorny area and you need to be very careful you don't end up with priority inversion and cause deadlock. At the time, it was the definitive work on the POSIX thread API, and multi-threaded programming in general. Attempts to show how the library s features can be used in quot real-life quot programs It explains the different tools defined by the library shows how to use. A challenge of the assignment included learning the POSIX Threads API. Note to mods: this is not a C programming problem. See Butenhof's book, Programming with POSIX Threads, §6.6.4. POSIX Pthreads are a popular example of an API that supports this generic capability. The mutex is already locked by the same thread. Each thread Completing this assignment provided a great introduction to parallel programming, Monte Carlo simulations, and the Posix Threads API. It probably belongs in a unix programming forum (although posix threads are more widely available than unix, that is where they are used most often).
